Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHAs),又叫聚羟基脂肪酸酯,是一种天然高分子材料,和塑料的性能相似,是一种热塑性材料,可以说它是唯一的一种既是天然材料又可以跟现有的塑料加工工艺融合的材料。与众多高分子材料相同,PHA的本质也是由同一种或不同种的羟基脂肪酸作为单体相互缩合而成,单体间以酯键相连。但是与众多高分子材料不同的是,PHA是一种由多种微生物合成的生物聚酯,其合成位置位于微生物胞内,合成行为由生物过程直接完成。PHA在菌体中以不溶于水的包涵体存在。其性能主要由单体结构及其含量决定,由于单体种类多样,主要分类有PHB、PHV、PHBV等。PHAs根据种类不同材料学性能差异较大,在可生物降解的包装材料、组织工程材料、缓释材料、电学材料以及医疗材料方面有广阔的应用前景。PHA具有良好的生物可降解性和生物相容性,可应用于高端生物医用领域,但缺点在于其降解速率太快,以致于贮存稳定性较差。
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are a family of bioplastic materials. They are produced by microorganisms intracellularly as carbon and energy storage compounds.Microbes can be cultivated on a range of carbon sources, including sugars, lipids, and other organic materials.
PHAs are both bio-based and biodegradable.
The “bio” in bio-based means that it is a material that is produced from a renewable biological source, also called a “feedstock”, such as vegetable oil, starch, and proteins.
In accordance with American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards, PHA bioplastics can biodegrade in all anaerobic and aerobic environments,PHAs are considered to be the only 100% biodegradable polymers.With the right amount of oxygen and humidity, PHA bioplastic can degrade in aerobic conditions via microbial action into water (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), and biomass within 20-45 days, which is in stark contrast to the petrochemical plastics that persist in environments for hundreds or even thousands of years.In anaerobic conditions, microorganisms degrade PHAs into CO2 and methane (CH4) in industrial facilities, soils, lakes, oceans, and even sewage.
Advantages of PHA include bio-origin (processing by microorganisms), biocompatibility, biodegradability, transformations of toxic materials by microorganisms during fermentation (halogenated derivatives, CO2), additional unique properties such as piezoelectricity, and excellent barrier properties. Moreover, the production of PHA polymers is independent of fossil resources. In the case of those produced by cyanobacteria, CO2 is absorbed and bound in the polymer. Besides, independence from agricultural areas is possible (cyanobacteria on the tops of buildings, at industrial sites, or in the ocean). Application areas in which PHA polymers offer unique values include medicine, cosmetics, pharmacy, and eco-agriculture.
